Remote work and email security: How safe is your system?

email security

If you run a business, you might have shifted your employees to remote work during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But what about email security? How safe is your system?

Email security is a big issue for any remote workforce. And protecting your company’s data can be a challenge.

But there are things you can do to beef up email security and prevent cyber attacks.

The fact is, most home security networks just are not secure – especially not as secure as the one at your bricks and mortar location. Also, if your employees are working remotely, they can be more vulnerable to scams, phishing or other cyber attacks because there is, simply put, no one to immediately ask about the issue.

Another issue is, most home networks and devices just don’t have enough security measures in place. Firewalls may be lapsed or not in place and maybe your employees don’t take care to run virus checks often enough.

So, what can you do, especially for email security? Since email scams and attacks are probably one of the most common threats, you need to take it seriously. Things you can do include:

  1. Invest in a security platform, so emails are scanned and protected.
  2. Make sure your employees use strong passwords – and are updating them often!
  3. Train your employees to spot fake or spammy emails – or to contact someone if they suspect they have received spam or a phishing scam.
  4. Invest in an email encryption platform, to protect your employees sending sensitive documents.
  5. Consider a cloud-based system with anti-virus protection.
  6. Look into whether managed IT services is a good fit.

In a nutshell, IT isn’t expensive; IT disasters are. The way we work is changing and remote work isn’t going anywhere. If your business is working remotely now and into the future, it might be time to consider managed IT support for email security.
