We are a few months into the new year and it’s a great time to take a pause and think about fraud protection.

We understand how big a topic this is and how overwhelming it can be, so here is a fraud protection checklist to get your small business started.

Let us know what you think! If you evaluate your small business’ fraud protection and want to chat, we’d love to help you.

  1. Audit your accounts, access and systems – annually: The thing is, a cyber attack can happen at any time but having a recent (or annual) audit of your business’ accounts, access points and systems can allow you to quickly address issues when they arise. That’s because you will know where your business stands – and what that means if something goes awry.
  2. Update antivirus software, firewalls and other programs: Be honest. When was the last time you made sure your protective systems were working and updated properly? It’s probably been a while. You are running your business; not checking for hackers. But neglecting this leaves you open to attack.
  3. Consider hiring an IT consultant. If all of this seems hard or confusing, there is help available. IT consultants can audit your systems and recommend changes that keep your small business safe from cyber criminals.
  4. Consider multi-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication or MFA is one of the best lines of defense against cyber crimes. That’s because if a criminal gets access to email they will need another way to verify their actions – potentially saving your small business.
  5. Train your employees. Yes, we get it. You can’t be scammed. But the thing is, you can. Everyone can. Properly training your employees to understand current fraud trends, such as AI and social engineering are critical. It’s not just a fake “prince in Nigeria” looking to hack you. These cybercriminals are sophisticated and ever evolving.
