What is cyber resilience? It’s a plan that lets you proactively prepare for not if but WHEN you will face an attack. Cybercrime costs billions of dollars annually – but there are things you can do to limit damage and recover quickly.

So how do you build a wall of cyber resilience? Here are some tips.

  1. Have a risk assessment performed to assess weak points, potential threats and impact of an attack
  2. Create a structure or team with defined roles
  3. Establish a plan for response, should an attack occur
  4. Regularly review and update your security measures
  5. Enforce strong passwords and multi-factor authentication use
  6. Create a culture of cybersecurity awareness and education

The fact is, your organization isn’t too small to be attacked. It’s just too small to make the news. And cybercriminals have upped their game. They are getting better and better and impersonating other agencies or even your own organization. It’s no longer fake Nigerian princes asking for cash.

These hackers have one job and that is to get your data and hold you hostage. They know how you communicate and they know how to exploit your vulnerabilities – including the biggest one of all, poor password hygiene.

If your organization does ONE THING this year, let it be improving password hygiene.

In most small businesses, 65% of employees reuse their passwords across multiple sites and despite the vast majority of them understanding the risk, they do it anyway.

And when forced to update passwords every 90 days, about half of all employees will simply use the same password, adding a digit or character to it – which leaves you vulnerable.

The most popular password is still….password123. Possibly with an exclamation point at the end.

It’s high-risk behavior. The fact is, cyber security is not top of mind for most people – leaving your organization vulnerable.
